Jump starting your forum with unique content
Without a doubt, content is a key part of obtaining quality search engine traffic. The great thing about content is that all content is not treated equally. This is particularly useful when creating a new forum and you are looking to get some of the traffic from your larger competitors. Large forums are measured by their member, post, and thread counts, none of which is an indicator of quality. As a new forum you have the advantage of content control. You get to set the mood and the pace for your forum.
Most forum admins encourage everything short of spam to simulate forum activity. Instead of falling into the same trap, set a good example and begin creating quality and unique content, your membership will grow, and the overall quality of your forum is beyond anything your competitor can create now that they are swelling with three word posters.
The best way to lead is by example. If you want your users to create quality and unique content, you must do so first. Of course, this step is easiest if your forum is on a subject that you know and care a lot about. If you are passionate about the subject of your forum, generating content should take little effort and even be enjoyable as well as rewarding. Start by choosing a topic that you know you would have liked to read about when you first got interested in this subject. This will be perfect for breaking the ice with new users that have a slight interest in the topic and swung by to check out what your forum was about. Aim to have posts be long enough to be informative but short enough that you don't frighten the reader into thinking he/she will have to commit a lot of time.
Secondly, you'll want to create some content that is a little more fresh and insightful. If the guest isn't new to the subject then they'll surely be bored with a bunch of beginner articles. Write about something new that stuck out in something you've read. You were glad you read it, now they'll be glad they read it too. By bringing useful information to the eyes of your users, they will be more inclined to return the favor and take the time to write an insightful article next time they run into something new. Everyone wins, and your forum increases its usefulness to the masses.
